So, it's 9 AM here and things are going pretty well. Knock on wood.
Our gameplan for last night was to let Monkey Man stay up until around 10 PM, give him some pain meds (slightly ahead of schedule) and then set the alarm for 2:15 AM and dose him up again.
Good plan, except for the part where we had to wake him up. Imagine waking a hibernating bear from a dead sleep, trying to make him eat a popsicle (to numb his taste buds) and then take some medicine that tastes like ass. He was like a wildcat in a bag and almost ended up working himself into such a frenzy that he came close to barfing all over his bed. Thankfully, he pulled himself together and went right back to sleep. Joey and I staggered back downstairs and plopped back into the bed and at the same time said, "Wonder how many more nights we're going to have to do this...."
The whole trick-or-treating issue was solved fairly easily. My friend Mer had the brilliant idea of making a bag for Monkey Man and presenting it to him like Trick or Treat was coming to him since he couldn't go. So I got him a DVD, a pack of UNO cards, a little candy, and a Power Ranger figure he's been wanting. It was an enormous hit and he soon forgot all about not being able to go out. (Thanks, Mer!!!! Worked like a charm!) He did dress up in his Red Ranger costume and help me hand out candy but that only lasted about 30 minutes before the kids stopped ringing the doorbell and Monkey Man was ready to ditch the costume and learn to play UNO. Then we watched his new DVD, Over the Hedge, which was just as cute as I remembered when we took him to see it in the theater.
Yesterday's biggest challenge was that the kid was starving to death and basically couldn't eat anything other than soup, popsicles, and very soft food - and no dairy products. Today he can eat pretty much anything he wants except hard foods like potato chips, hard cookies, etc. So far he's had some yogurt and 5 mini-chocolate chip muffins and a few sips of a vanilla Frappucino.
In today's exciting plans, I'm going to make some banana muffins this afternoon and my sister is coming by around 3 to hang out for a bit. Other than that the emphasis will be controlling the pain and making sure he's eating and drinking enough and getting some rest. He already says that his throat feels better today, but that may be the codeine talking.
Now, he's brought that Power Ranger thing over to me for the 8th time in 30 minutes to help him get the helmet back on. He may not be the only one dipping into the codeine today.

Superglue the helmet on. That's what we do with barbie shoes.
